PLATES + POLICY = PROTECTION
PERSONAL & BUSINESS VEHICLES
Regardless if your vehicle is brand new or fifty years old and worthless to you, the Saskatchewan SGI license plate provides basic insurance coverage only with the minimum legal requirements for liability and basic insurance benefits. SGI Auto Fund has not increased the plate provided liability limit of just $200,000 since 1985! Liability is when you’re determined to be responsible for causing an accident, which results in property damage or injury to others. Liability means taking financial responsibility for your actions when you’re to blame. When you purchase an extension auto policy (often called a package policy) you protect your family and your finances. With an auto policy you increase your liability limits (at least $2 million), enhance your injury benefits, lower your deductible (such as $100 instead of $700), cover rental vehicles, repair glass stone chips and even replace a brand new vehicle without depreciation for up to 5 years.
Regardless of No Fault insurance legislation in Saskatchewan, you can still be sued for an accident that is your fault in any province or state without No Fault legislation (such as Alberta). You can also be sued in Saskatchewan if you damage property such as building, train or commercial transport vehicle or injure another person if lost income or medical costs were not fully covered by only the plate injury insurance. For example, if you injure a high-salaried person in a collision and must pay to supplement their lost income. If you travel or operate a vehicle including a rental in the USA, we highly recommend a minimum of $5,000,000 liability limit as legal injury settlements for accidents can be much higher than in Canada.
With an auto policy, your family members are financially protected from injury and loss no matter what insurance the other driver has. For instance, if you have an accident with a driver who is under-insured, intoxicated or impaired (therefore has no insurance), or simply forgot to renew their insurance (expired or invalid insurance). Family security, an important part of your auto policy, protects you and your loved ones with limits up to $2,000,000. The auto policy also provides higher injury and death benefit limits including replacement income, education allowance and funeral expenses.
The extension auto policy coverage is available for as little as $5 per month and every vehicle you own or operate in Saskatchewan should have at least $2 million liability with family security. Your SGI license plate alone is simply not enough to protect you and your family.
